Love for Flying from age 10 and flying solo around Australia at age 16 – an inspirational story of Mitch Boyle
Flying from age 10, Recreational pilot’s licence at age 15 and flying solo around Australia at age 16 !
Sharing Mitch Boyle’s story and his passionate speech which he delivered at Frog Hollows Flyers Club on 21 February 2015.
From Mitch Boyle, CEO of Sports Aviation Australia.
“My name is Mitch Boyle and I am a director and CEO of Sports Aviation Australia.
I consider myself blessed and very fortunate to have grown up in the aviation industry. My father and I both got our licenses together fuelling a love and respect relationship for aviation. Learning to fly from as young as 10 years old has given flight to a world of possibilities and endless dreams.
Aviation is a hugely satisfying industry to be involved in, initial training is tough, it’s meant to be tough. You’re getting into a very responsible and diligent profession, but push on through and it’s very rewarding.
At the age of 15 I took on what, for many, is their most memorable flying moment, their first solo. Whilst mine was unforgettable, for me however it was taking my first passenger, my mother, absolutely terrified of flying at least in small aircraft, she decides to be the first. I’ll always love and cherish that moment; I just wish I could regain blood flow to my right arm.
As young as 16 I began embarking on many large scale flights such as departing Merimbula for Lake Eyre. What is normally desert, suddenly transforms into Australia’s largest inland lake with flora and fauna that has to be seen from the air to be believed.
My biggest feat, solo circumnavigating Australia, 33 days with 90 hours of flight time. This was a real test of all my training to date. With the many hurdles and subsequent self-pride it only became natural to strive toward a career in aviation.
My vision is simple;
The aviation industry has come a long way since it began a little over 100 years ago. In one century, we have turned our planet into one small world. In doing so, we have created a big future for us all. As we plunge into the second century of aviation, China has begun deregulating it’s airspace. This move is providing growth that will change aviation on a global scale. While the majority of new trainee pilots set their sights on a license as a means to a career, for some among China’s more affluent classes it’s a key to a flamboyant new hobby.
Sport Aviation Australia will grow to become a sought after ‘stepping stone’ for a wide range of careers in aviation.
I firmly believe that we have only just begun to realize the potential China has for an already rapidly growing sport aviation sector.
The exhilaration of flying is too keen, the pleasure too great, for it to be neglected as a sport.
As you can see, I am very passionate about aviation
I will be proud to say we instill this passion and enthusiasm as a whole opening students’ aviation floodgates to a world of opportunities.”
